Moving from 4:3 to 16:9? Don't throw away your projection screen yet!

Going from 4:3 to 16:9? You might not have to buy a new projection screen!

If you don't want white areas above and below your projected image in 16:9, there are some things you can do with your old 4:3 projection screen. True: a new projection screen in the right aspect ratio is ideal. If all of your budget has gone to your projector and you still like your old projector screen, there is a way to use it as a 16:9 screen.

Basically, it come down to simply rolling the screen out less. It gives you a disadvantage as well, because the projected image will be slightly higher than before (top of the image compared - before and after), as you are no longer using the top 5 cm border.

Here's how to do it for manual and electrical projection screens:

Manual projection screens.
A lot depends on how flexibly you can set the roll-out height. If there are fixed settings, then there might still be some white left at the top or bottom.
To set it up: project the image at the screen width in 16:9 and then align the top of the image with the bottom of the housing. You now have your maximumm 16:9 image to which you can adjust the lower black border.
Since you now know how much to roll out, make a small marker at the top of your screen, so you know how far to roll the screen out next time.

Electrical projection screens:
Use the same process as above to determine the projected image size. Now, find out how to adjust the end limit switches, to match the screen fabric area to the projected image. Once set, the projection screen will always roll out to the new height.
