As much as we all like to watch the movies on the big screen, convincing all family members of the necessity of all the equipment in the living room can be a challenge.
Here are some solutions, from cheap to the extravagant:
- Choose a case colour that best matches the colour of your walls or the other equipment/furniture already in your room. Many projection screen manufacturers offer more option than plain white; mostly silver and black. Choosing a colour that matches the room will help blend in the housing of the projection screen.
- Have your projection screen's housing painted in a custom colour. For the best match with your interior, have the housing of the screen painted to match your walls. This will make the screen nearly invisible.
- Hide your screen in a false ceiling. There are projection screens which are designed to be installed into a false ceiling. This makes them hardly visible. Combine this with a lift for your projector and you have the ultimate combination.
- Have a cabinet or book case built with an integrated projection screen. When a projection screen is integrated in a piece of furniture, it will only be visible when rolled out. The added bonus is that the furniture hiding the screen can be used for storing books or hiding other equipment, such as DVD players.
- Create an enclosure for the projection screen. If you don't have a false ceiling, you can create a box to surround the screen and fix this to the ceiling. Leave only a slot on the bottom and paint it in the same colour as your walls.
- Completely re-design and refurbish your room. Let your fantasy run free and redesign your room. This normally requires a great level of DIY skills, a considerable budget and if available, a dedicated room. Great things can be achieved, such as theatre designs, where the screen is hidden behind a curtain, or themes, such as Science Fiction, where screens are made to resemble a part of a starships interior.
If you need more inspiration, you might want to look at forums, where members of show great designs (either very skilled DIY projects or made by custom installers).
Other sources of inspiration can be custom installers and interior designers who can help you make all your cinematic dreams come true, without sacrifing the room's design.
